At this moment, I am sitting on an Interislander Ferry with limited wifi (paid of course), looking out over the water at the South Island of NZ. Earlier we saw Hector Dolphins playing in the wake of the ferry.
Yesterday was a travel day from Tongariro National Park, down to Paekakariki, a small town on the west coast of NZ, right on the Tasman Sea. We stayed at the Paekakariki Holiday Park which was adjacent to the Queen Elizabeth Park, a coastal natural preserve with hiking and mountain biking trails and lovely stretch of black sand beach. Off the coast we could see some of the barrier islands of the South Island in the Marlborough Sounds area and just to the northwest the island of Kapiti, which is a protected nature preserve for protected birds. The holiday park was full of Kiwi families on a weekend holiday, cooking bangers on the barby, riding scooters and bikes, and playing on the jumping pillow. The jumping pillow is a modified trampoline that is surrounded by sand and looks like a large mound. The girls enjoyed bouncing on it until Skyler tried to do a seat drop which launched her directly on the ground, our first injury of the trip.
With limited wifi, I am unable to load photos right now, but
promise to put together a slide show to display as soon as we get a better
connection. We have enjoyed reading everyone's comments!
Our ferry will arrive in Picton in about one hour. From
there we plan to drive west towards Pelorus and then Nelson, possibly onto the
Abel Tasman today. Our next big adventure is to either tramp (hike) or
sea kayak in the Abel Tasman National Park. It's late summer, early fall,
with kids back in school, so we are hoping it is not too busy. Cheers!
