Traveling and the Internet (where for art thou?)

Traverse City, Michigan:  July 18, 2013
For some strange reason, traveling and internet do not go well together.  Up North here, we are relying on either the AT&T iPad connection, Mark's iPhone, or (excuse me for admitting this) neighbor's wifi that is not locked.  So, it has been hard to do a daily post while on vacation here in the "Camp House".  So here is an overdue  recap of our adventure so far...

After a pretty much non-stop van ride up I-75, (16 hours including lunch and dinner breaks), we arrived here around 9:30pm on Sunday, July 7.  The rest of the Singleton clan was already settled into the house.  Greetings all around and then we called it a night.

Over the next week, we swam/paddled in Cedar Lake, biked the roads and trails, and ate lots of pie. We even had a visit to Sleeping Bear Dunes for the annual Singleton/Wolfe picnic and July birthday celebration that included me taking the girls (Skyler, Mckayla and Sami) on an 8.5 mile bike ride along the new Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail.  The trail traveled along the base of the dunes, through forests, to the historic village of Glen Haven and then to Glen Harbor where we enjoyed ice cream at the Pine Cone Ice Cream Stand.  Then we turned around and went back.  What a wonderful trail, we look forward to its future sections being completed.

That's the cool thing about this area, they take recreation seriously.  We have seen people stand up paddling on all of the lakes (all ages, sizes and shapes).  Tons of folks cycling; old, young, racers, school groups, families, and tour groups.  Runners and walkers grace the trails at all times of the day. There are people on sailboats, kayaks, jet skis, water skis, wake boards, pontoon boats, and inner tubes.  I guess having a long winter encourages outdoor recreation at its fullest during the warmer weather.

Speaking of weather, we left torrential rain and flooding in NC to find HOT, dry weather in Michigan.  The high yesterday (July 17) was 92 degrees with the heat index being over 100!  We are not complaining, the moss and mold between our toes has finally dried out and we have been loving the warm water temperatures of Cedar Lake.  Yet, cycling yesterday into Traverse City was pretty brutal.  The girls and I had to walk into stores along the shopping district to cool off.  A dip in Cedar Lake once we returned to the house did help the icky, sticky feeling that engulfed us.

For this trip, cycling has been our major family outing.  Both girls had outgrown their bikes, so we rented hybrids for them from Brick Wheels.  They have used them to get to the lake, ride around the neighborhood and humor us with family bicycle outings on the local rails to trails.  Today (July 18) we rode up to Suttons Bay and had lunch at the 45th Parallel Cafe.  The heat was still there, but clouds and shady sections of trail kept us from wilting while riding.  Sadly, after a week long rental, we had to return the bikes this afternoon.

Our time here in Michigan comes to a close on Sunday when we make the trek back down south to NC.  Until then, there is more swimming, paddling, cycling, running, cleaning (yes, that too), and eating of pie to be accomplished.  Hopefully I can garner internet access again before we leave to make another post.  But now, it's lake time.

Scene Break to Skyler*****
Hi! Its me!
The one and only Skyler!
And no that's not how I'm introducing myself.
It's hot. I feel the great need to put emphasis on that. Because, holy jumping Moomers cows it's Michigan! The place that is freezing for most of the year.
And here I am, sweating through the t shirt and shorts I'm wearing. And Ceder Lake feels like a bathtub. Yep, that's right, bathtub. Have you ever swum in a bathtub while it was ninety degrees out? If you have, well, okay that was a rhetorical question. But you get the idea!
But it is an upgrade from freezing water I suppose.
Since I have my priorities straight, I will now focus on food. Because up here, well, they know how to make pies! And cupcakes. And fish. And shrimp. Also apparently wine, not that I would know!!!!!!! (I only know it because we always have a huge menu when we go out to eat and its all for wine. Its bigger than the regular menu. Adults are weird.) But anyway, if you ever find yourself in Traverse City and eat like I do (which basically means a lot, frequently) I would highly suggest eating at these places/things.
  • Traverse City Pie Company-- Okay, first off, PIE!!! Get the Mountain Berry, Key Lime, and never forget the chocolate cream! Okay just get all of them! Every single pie! They're amazing! And try a Bavarian cream turnover. They're the best!
  • Simply Cupcakes--simply, cupcakes. I love the cupcakes. each one is delicious! Just ask my family how much I love them. they will tell you a lot. Or ask my waistband. *Or as a friend of the family says, "Too many cupcakes!"
  • Any bakery for bread. All delicious. Pesto batard...
  • Fish, check out the menu for restaurants, see if they have white fish or wall eye. Because fish up here is good.
  • Basically, just walk in just about anywhere and you'll find good food. Haven't been disappointed yet.
And also I'm sunburnt. Yay me! (I know you're laughing Shorty)
MK's b-day was a few days ago. Now she's 13! Yaaay! Not really. We had cupcakes. Real yay.

And now, ladies and gentlemen of the court, I bid my leave to go and swim in a bathtub like lake.

Farewell! *cape swoosh*
(Okay where did the internet go!)

Yep, it's lake time so I will only try to upload two photos..

After New Zealand

It has been 15 weeks since we returned from New Zealand.  The trip defines our year so far, but the experiences in New Zealand encourage us to explore our own little corner of the world here in western North Carolina and the United States in general.  To keep the records of our adventures, I will continue to update the blog.

Leaving the drought in New Zealand, we found ourselves immersed in wet weather here in NC.  First with a late winter and a spring that never seemed to want to surface.  Now, one of the wettest summers we can remember.  Rain falls for Lake Toxaway (in the next county over), surpassed 18" for the month of June!  We have had rain almost every day since I can remember now.  Each of our adventures this spring/summer have included "clouds sweating" (rain, as the girls call it).  But enough whining about the rain, on to the adventures...

Looking back on the past 15 weeks, here are a few of Singleton Family Adventures to share:

NC Science Olympiad State Championships
NC State University: Raleigh, NC
April 26-27, 2013
The 2nd place regional finish the day before we left for NZ, positioned Fairview's Science Olympiad team a state competition bid.  The kids did an amazing job preparing, studying, competing and supporting one another.  For a first year team at state, two of our teams brought home medals and the team placed 20th overall out of 45 teams, pretty amazing!  Mckayla and her partner, Alexis, placed 8th in Dynamic Planet.  The bus rides to and from were epic and the mad dashing around the campus to get to events was exciting, yet stressful.  What a wonderful experience for the girls!  Their teacher/coach, Mr. Ray Crawford, deserves a medal of his own for his leadership of this program.

Mother's Day Hikes
May 12, 2013

Okay, this was a pretty low key hiking day, but we did visit the new trail to High Falls.  The trail was built to provide put in access for the West Fork of the Tuckaseegee.  A very impressive trail.  The rainfall in the area made the falls a torrent of water with no dry spots for lunch, so we hiked back out and drove over to Whiteside Mountain for another short hike and picnic.

Skyler's 8th Grade Graduation
May 29, 2013

Skyler "graduated" from K-8 this year.  Next year she heads to Smoky Mountain High School as a freshman, where does the time go...

As one of the top 3 students in the 8th grade, Skyler was selected to give the "present" speech.  With help from her AIG teacher, Mrs. Martin, and of course the peanut gallery at home, her speech was absolutely amazing.  And I am not just saying that because I am her mother!  She was animated, funny, and had the audience in the palm of her hand.  We were very proud of her and it was great to have the grandparents (Oma and Opa) be able to attend.

Mad Mountain Mud Run
June 1, 2013

During June we had one dry spell for about a week, right before the Mad Mountain Mud Run.  Yet, it was still a muddy good time.  By no means were we competitive, but we had a blast working together to negotiate some pretty tough obstacles and lots of mud this year.

Girls in Science Camp
Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont
June 10-15, 2013

Mckayla applied and was accepted into the "Girls in Science" camp at Tremont this year!  Twenty four girls from NC and TN are selected to attend this week long science camp for rising 8th grade girls.  Skyler attended last year and loved it.  Mckayla's experiences were equally amazing.  She caught butterflies, dragon flies, and salamanders; hiked, sang goofy camp songs, and did camp chores; and made lots of new friends.

Endless River Adventures Kayak Camp
June 14-16, 2013

Skyler attended kayak camp with ERA for 3 days in June.  Mckayla wasn't able to join because of the conflict with science camp.  Over the 3 days, Skyler got her roll on the right side, paddled the lake, Tuck, Nanty and Ocoee.  Fun times with a fun group of kids and an awesome instructor, Juliet.

Backpacking in Panthertown
June 23-25, 2013
with the Crawfords

Finally, we made time for a backpacking trip!  After New Zealand, the girls were ready for more, but finding the time, was problematic.  In late June, we did a 2 night trip with the Crawfords into Panthertown Valley.  Our base camp was near the intersection of Panthertown Valley Trail and North Power Line Rd Trail.  Awesome spot with plenty of trees, easy access to trails, and a "cooler" of a stream.  One pot gourmet meals, cheesecake, the "interesting" raspberry crumble, rain, thunderstorms, the fire that just wouldn't start, smores, red dot trails, jungle hiking and rock skipping all made for a great adventure.

Wrightsville Beach
June 27-July 1, 2013

Our last little adventure for the month of June included a quick trip to Wrightsville Beach on the coast of NC.  The primary reason for the trip was to catch up with my friend Linka and her family, but we were also in need of some beach time, sunny weather, ocean waves, fresh seafood, and a reprieve from the rainforest of the mountains.  Guess what?  It rained there.  We did have some nice weather and were able to run, walk on the beach, try boogie boarding, swim in the pool, and stand up paddle, plus eat lots of yummy seafood.  But we also spent a lot of time inside our little motel reading, relaxing and watch the beach life go by.  It was great to catch up with Linka and we hope to make another trip down that way this year.
Our view from the motel.  Easy access to paddling, running and the beach.

Stand up paddling on the waterway with Linka and Lucas.

So, it hasn't been all work and no play, but we do miss our daily adventures of traveling in New Zealand.  Next up is a trip to Michigan.
